The main step is to Do the Research to Find Apartments Worth Visiting. While looking through the variants you should pay attentions to such features as:

private corner of the patio garden     Upscale Town House, Vancouver, BC, Canada
Good    neighborhood:
If you have an opportunity check out the neighborhood and what you are looking for. If you enjoy eating out and nightlife, make sure you're not moving to a sleepy cul de sac far away from the action. If you want a quiet neighborhood where your children can play, a house rental along a major road may be affordable and look good on paper, but isn't the best option.

Location:
Convenience in location (close to transportation, work, schools, shopping etc.)
If you are currently without a car, check every potential proximity to public transportation. A place may be well-priced and in a great neighborhood, but if you have to spend most of your time walking or calling taxis, it might not be so attractive. What is more, you need to factor the cost of transportation into your budget for a realistic picture of how much an apartment really costs.
Affordable    price:
Avoid looking at apartments outside of your budget. You can be disappointed when you can’t afford the apartment of your dreams. Instead, set a firm number and only look for places that fall within your budget.

Good management and maintenance: Is the landscaping neat? Are the lawns and hedges trimmed? Or are there weeds growing out of the cracks in concrete? Do the neighbors take good care of their apartments? People who don't are more likely to be inconsiderate. The age of a building tells you other important information, like how old the facilities in the walls are (which you will ask about in a moment) or how likely you may be to have maintenance problems resulting from old flooring, ceilings, windows, or plumbing

 two sinks    bedroom

Amenities (swimming pool, sauna, laundry hook-ups or utilities). Check for the amenities of the unit that you are going to rent, if they included in rent or not, how much do they cost etc. Is this home boasts an absolutely quiet area with no traffic on either the front or the back of the townhouse or house. Is rental fee includes: electricity, high-speed internet, cable TV network, one or two parking stalls, storage, kitchen utensils and bedroom linens, gardening, garbage collection, etc.

Square footage. Appearance, interior and exterior: Be careful and avoid such things on the property: junk on the balconies or front door, blankets on the windows instead of curtains, loud barking.

Or inside the unit: Turn on lights and faucets, and flush toilets throughout the apartment make sure they all function properly. Examine floors and walls for any type of damage. Carpet, hardwood, linoleum, drywall, and tiles should all be inspected. Check what new stuff you need to buy to the new apartment if it is unfurnished. Of course, you are going to need major items like a bed and couch. But you may not realize all the small things, the basic apartment essentials and you are going to need to buy, as well: things like a shower curtain, dishes and utensils, a vacuum, towels, a bathroom rug, etc.

Flexible terms: Make sure, that the terms that showed in the ad of the unit are convenient for you, so you can live in the apartment as long as you wish, and do not have to leave in a rush because of the new family, that came earlier to stay in your apartment.

Additional fees: Necessarily ask the property manager about the additional move in/move out or cleaning fees, so that it would not be a surprise for you at the end of your vacation or living in the unit. These are just a few advices that can help you to find an apartment of your dreams.   Article: Canadian Architecture
